Stories From the Past Meet the Present

It has been a joy entertaining visitors at the Annex with our growing collection of Fairgrounds memorabilia. As more collections are archived, FHF continues to connect you with the history of our country fairgrounds.

It was so rewarding to help someone recognize a family member in a vintage photo from our collection. Our neighbors, the Vennums and Schirles, stopped by to visit and reminisce. They were excited to see some family photos on display at the last SCC Fair and had never seen the article and picture of their grandmother. The Schirle family had no idea that Grandma canned peaches, and Gene Vennum always shared great stories and fond memories of the Fair. Their reactions to their family photos were enlightening regarding their relatives’ activities at the Fair. The fulfillment we gain from our community inspires us to continue our mission to preserve, protect, and catalog our Fairgrounds history.

FHF Update

To date, FHF has archived and cataloged almost 1,000 items using PastPerfect Software for Museum Collections. Each item is encased in archival packaging or acid-free boxes. Each item is labeled with the donor’s name and item number, and a scan or photo of the item is attached to the cataloged entry. It’s time-consuming but rewarding, and we want to extend a special thank you to our amazing volunteer, Tori G. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and we have only just begun. To make this all happen, we have received many gracious donations of file cabinets, archival boxes, and supplies, and we are always looking for more!

Join Our Board

Our heritage family is expanding with our newest board member, Michael Lara, joining us from the Martin Luther King Library, California Room. He has already made an impact by bringing his library science and archival experience. It’s great to have him on board to help us achieve our goals. Like any good neighborhood board, we are looking for others! Let us know if you or someone you know might be a good fit.

You are invited to come have a cup of coffee and share a Fairgrounds story or memory with us while viewing our heritage collection at the Fairgrounds. We are looking for volunteers to help us. Your talent and interest would be greatly appreciated. Connect with us at [email protected]. We look forward to having you take a walk down memory lane with us.

Additionally, contact us if you have Fairgrounds items to donate or loan for the FHF 2025 Heritage Exhibit at the Fair that runs July 30th – August 3rd. Monetary donations will also help with our archiving and exhibit expenses.

It’s been wonderful connecting, and we hope you enjoy a cup of coffee with your new Peach Cake recipe! Click here for more information about the Fairgrounds Heritage Foundation, and for all things fair-related, head to The Fair!

Please share this with your family, friends, and neighbors. It’s gonna be a great Fair this year and we hope to see you there!!!!
